Star Program
The STAR Program was enacted by the New York State Legislature in 1997. The purpose of the program is to reduce school property taxes on your primary residence. Applications are available from your Town Assessor's Office. The amount of STAR exemption changes yearly.
The STAR exemptions for 2010-2011 is as follows:

If you are receiving or eligible for the BASIC STAR program, there are no age or income limits and you do not need to apply each year after the initial application.
If you are receiving or eligible for the ENHANCED or SENIOR STAR Program you can apply each year by submitting copies of your NYS tax returns to your Town Assessor by March 1st of each year or if you would like to continue receiving the exemption in future years without having to reapply each year, you must sign up for the STAR Income Verification Program with your Town Assessor.
