Discipline is essential in ensuring the safety of our students. Therefore, the Beekmantown Central School District Transportation Department has made changes to disciplinary procedures. In addition, the department has implemented the same forms used by the buildings in the district. These forms are completed by the transportation department and forwarded directly to the building administrators. The guidelines for appropriate behavior on a school bus include the following:
  • Children are expected to speak in a quiet voice that will not distract the driver.
  • Children are expected to respect the rights and property of others.
  • Children are expected to remain seated until they arrive at their stop.
  • Children are expected to follow the driver’s instructions, especially upon entering or exiting the bus.
  • Eating and drinking are prohibited.
  • Large items that may create a safety issue are not allowed on the bus.
  • Personal listening devices must be played at a “personal volume” that does not distract the driver or other passengers (only appropriate programming will be played on school bus AM/FM radios).

Each driver, student, and bus run is unique. It is important to remember that busing issues may be dealt with differently on one bus, than another. It is essential that drivers are able to concentrate on the children as they enter and exit the bus, and be able to react to the dangers they may encounter on the roads. Drivers process a tremendous amount of information in ensuring the safety of our students. Therefore, keeping the children on the bus quiet and orderly plays a critical role in assuring everyone’s safety.
