Star Program

The STAR Program was enacted by the New York State Legislature in 1997. The purpose of the program is to reduce school property taxes on your primary residence. The amount of STAR exemption changes yearly.

Beginning with the 2011/12 school tax bills, the savings resulting from the Basic or Enhanced STAR exemptions are limited to a 2% increase over the prior years. The cap is on the savings amount, not the exemption. The Star Savings will no longer be the amount of the STAR exemption times the Tax Rate. The Star Savings for 2018-2019 is as follows:

Basic Star - available for owner occupied primary residences where the resident owners' and their spouses income is less than $500,000. There are no age limits and you do not need to apply each year.

Enhanced or Senior Star - provides an increased benefit for the primary residences of senior citizens (age 65 or older) with qualifying incomes.
