7th graders organizing Honor Run

Join BMS 7th graders as they raise money for North Country Honor Flight with a 5K run!

Seventh graders at Beekmantown Middle School are busily preparing to host this year’s North Country Honor Run.

The run is Saturday, May 17, at the U.S. Oval staring at 8 a.m. All funds raised will go to North Country Honor Flight, a nonprofit that brings veterans to Washington, D.C., to visit national monuments and be honored for their service.

This is the fourth year that Beekmantown middle schoolers are putting on the event, and the students want this year’s run to be the biggest and best yet.

They encourage runners to dress up in their finest patriotic gear - there will be prizes for the best dressed.

In addition to a 5K run, there will also be a 1-mile walk. This year, they've added a Children's Bike Brigade - decorate your bike or stroller and parade it around the Oval!

There will also be raffles, face painting, a bouncy house and other fun at the Oval that day. The students are looking to create a carnival-type atmosphere that celebrates local veterans.

The day will kick off at 7 a.m. with the launch of the first North Country Honor Flight of 2025. Veterans will be honored with a ceremony, then escorted around the U.S. Oval by a motorcade of motorcycles. They’ll be followed by runners starting the 5K. Students and teachers organizing the event hope it will be a truly unforgettable experience.

About 100 7th graders are working on the event as part of their project-based learning experience.

They have split up the various tasks involved in the event across various groups. Different groups of students have visited and emailed local businesses to ask for sponsorships, created fliers and pamphlets, met with local groups like veterans organizations, made videos, and planned logistics.

It's been a great experience for them to learn teamwork and collaboration. They've also learned how to be professional in emails, meetings and calls.

Show them your support and show local veterans your appreciation by joining us for the 2025 North Country Honor Run on May 17! Register now!
